Learn Japanese – Scheduled Information

Hey everyone,

Back from Kyoto and straight into a new Japanese lesson :)

Today’s lesson deals with asking about and giving schedule information.

Take English examples:

“What time is the meeting scheduled to start?”

“The meeting is scheduled to start at 9am.”

“When are you scheduled to go on Summer vacation?”

“I am scheduled to go on vacation in August.”

So, this is another relatively simple structure in Japanese:

INFORMATION + DICTIONARY VERB + yoteimasu

- or -

NON-VERB + NO particle + yoteimasu

So the key is yoteimasu.

Let’s do some examples:

“What time is the meeting scheduled to start?”

kaigi wa nan ji ni hajimaru yoteimasuka

Let’s break it down:

kaigi  meeting

wa  topic marker particle (“as for”)

nan  what

ji  time

ni  direction particle (to)

hajimaru  dictionary form of hajimarimasu (to start/begin)

yoteimasu  to schedule

ka  question particle

Okay? So it’s always dictionary form of verb and then yoteimasu

…except if you don’t use a verb:

“It’s scheduled from 9 o’clock.”

ku ji kara no yoteimasu

Let’s break it down:

ku  nine

ji  time

kara  from

no  possessive particle ([of] or ['s])

yoteimasu  to schedule

In the above example we added no before yoteimasu because there was no verb in the sentence.

So, your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to translate the following sentences to English:

1. natsu yasumi wa nan kagetsu ni iku yoteimasuka

2. hachi gatsu kara no yoteimasu

Okay?

The answers are at the bottom of the page.

Cheers,
David
